The pre-N Kona quietly shares N family DNA

The OS Kona's 1.6 T-GDi is the G4FJ Gamma II twin-scroll turbo four - the same engine family that underpins the i30 N-Line and Veloster, running a Kefico ECU from the same Bosch-based platform as the hotter Hyundai N cars. In Australia the turbo only came with the 7-speed wet dual-clutch and on-demand AWD on the Elite and Highlander grades, so it's a genuinely warm little SUV that's been overlooked rather than a slow one.

FAQ

Common questions

Is the 1.6 turbo Kona worth tuning?

Yes - the G4FJ has decent headroom on the stock twin-scroll turbo, and a properly developed ECU flash is comfortably the best-value mod. It's the same engine family as the i30 N-Line, so the tuning knowledge carries straight over.

What sort of gains can I realistically expect?

A Stage 1 flash on 98 RON typically lifts a G4FJ into the 150-165 kW range with a solid torque bump down low. Bolt-on intake and a catback don't add much power on their own here - the tune does the heavy lifting.

Does it need a tune for basic mods, or can I just bolt parts on?

Intakes and exhausts can go on without a tune, but you won't see real gains until the ECU is remapped to use them. We'd always pair any hardware with a flash rather than leaving the factory map fighting your changes.

Any weak points I should know about before tuning?

Watch the timing chain tensioner (a known soft spot between roughly 60-120k km) and keep on top of oil, since these direct-injection Gammas can be sensitive to oil consumption and intake carbon. The wet 7-speed DCT is reasonably tough, but we keep torque sensible rather than chasing big numbers to protect the clutch packs.
