Hyundai Elantra (AD 2017-20)

The atmo Nu that just keeps going

The AD Elantra's 2.0-litre Nu is a naturally aspirated, multi-point-injected four with a timing chain - simple, durable and cheap to live with. We would rather be straight with you: it is an economy commuter, not a performance base. Very little factory headroom, almost no aftermarket built for it, and small tuning gains. If you want real numbers, look at the Elantra N or N Line.

FAQ

Common questions

What's the best first mod for an Elantra 2.0?

Honestly, tyres and a fresh set of pads do more for this car than anything under the bonnet. If you want a bit of induction noise, a panel filter or basic intake is cheap, but treat it as sound rather than real power.

Will a tune or remap make a worthwhile difference?

Not really. A naturally aspirated 2.0 like this responds very little to a remap - you might find a handful of kilowatts and slightly sharper throttle, but nothing you'll feel day to day. We'd only suggest it if you're chasing throttle response and economy tweaks, not power.

What realistic power gains can I expect from bolt-ons?

Very modest. Intake, a cat-back exhaust and a tune together might net single-digit kilowatts at the wheels on a good day. If you want a genuinely quick Elantra, the 1.6 turbo (Sport/SR) or the i30N is the platform, not the atmo car.

Are there any known weak points to watch?

The Nu 2.0 is a reliable, long-lived engine - keep oil changes regular and it'll do big kilometres. The more common annoyances on AD Elantras are around the auto and general age-related stuff (suspension bushes, mounts), not the engine itself.
